Fiona is a queer transdisciplinary multimedia visual artist, educator, and poet. They work in black and white analog photography, installation, sculpture, textile, assemblage, and painting. Fiona’s practice is a broad exploration of memory, time, and the way that they map onto each other to articulate our experiences. They are particularly interested in creating a dialogue between the abstract, phantasmagorical quality of photography and the concrete, earthbound properties of ceramic sculpture. Fiona gives photography physical weight, as their practice is often an exploration of how to ground their own memory and spirit in the earthly realm. Through the layering of photographic decals, watercolor paintings, found objects, and ceramic sculpture Fiona explores the expressive potential of a visual language that combines photographic processes with sculptural materials, rather, morphing photography into a sculptural material in its own right. Fiona’s visual art practice is conceived through ritualistic modes which allow them to synthesize time and experience, particularly its nonlinear and unraveling nature. The layering of opposing materialities allows them to create portals and relics of other imaginary dimensions as a way to produce a visual lexicon for what is intangible. Fiona hopes that this work can offer an opening, or perhaps a mode through which one may begin to understand memory and time as a part of a dialectic where they inform and create each other.
